Background of the Study
Hand hygiene is a fundamental preventive measure in reducing the transmission of infectious diseases. In Lagos State, Nigeria, public health education programs have been implemented to promote proper handwashing practices among diverse populations. These initiatives leverage mass media, school programs, and community outreach to impart knowledge about the importance of hand hygiene in preventing infections such as diarrheal diseases and respiratory illnesses (Olayinka, 2023). Effective public health education has been linked to significant improvements in health behaviors and outcomes, as individuals become more aware of the connection between handwashing and disease prevention. However, challenges such as cultural habits, inadequate access to clean water, and varying levels of health literacy may hinder the adoption of recommended practices. Evidence indicates that when public health education is culturally tailored and reinforced through community engagement, the impact on hand hygiene practices is more pronounced (Adebayo, 2024). This study aims to assess the influence of public health education on hand hygiene in Lagos State, identifying factors that promote or hinder its effectiveness and proposing strategies for enhancing public awareness.
Statement of the Problem
Despite extensive public health education campaigns, many communities in Lagos State continue to report low adherence to proper hand hygiene practices. Factors such as limited access to water and sanitation facilities, cultural norms, and inconsistent messaging contribute to suboptimal handwashing behaviors. The persistence of these issues leads to increased transmission of preventable diseases, thereby undermining the overall effectiveness of health promotion efforts. In addition, the lack of rigorous monitoring and evaluation of these education programs means that the extent of their impact on behavior change remains unclear. This gap in knowledge hinders the ability of public health authorities to refine educational strategies and allocate resources effectively. Without addressing these challenges, improvements in hand hygiene practices may remain limited, perpetuating the cycle of infection and disease transmission (Okeke, 2023).
